The Isle of Wight Scooter Rally has carved itself a place in scootering folklore as the biggest of its kind in modern times. It attracts scooterists from all over the United Kingdom, Europe and the world, all eager to experience the Great British scooter rally.
If you’ve been fortunate enough to attend a scooter rally in another country then you may understand why American, Australian, Japanese and other scooterists from far and wide come to see how we do it. In some countries they’re lucky to get many more than 100 or scooters at an event. Turning up at the Isle of Wight therefore to see 6000 scooters all on one small island for a single event, quite literally blows some people’s minds.
People may knock us for one thing or another, but it seems that if nothing else, we here in Great Britain do know a thing or two about putting on a good scooter rally!
For 2014 the Isle of Wight rally is changing with the emphasis being brought back to the scooters and focussing around the rally campsite at Smallbrook Speedway stadium.
The main organisers, the VFM* Scooter Collective, have said they feel it’s time for a bit of a change, and this includes no longer using the Ice Stadium in Ryde as their centre of entertainment for scooterists.
What’s Going On
The focus for 2014 is upon in creating a huge central hub for the rally on the Island. VFM are opening up a large exhibition hall at Smallbrook, which will accommodate the International Scooter Show tying in perfectly with the enormous Parts Fair which is already situated in the Stadium. This will be complimented by a large marquee to host all sorts of entertainment during the daytime such as live music, weird cabaret and more. There will be more focus on interactive displays too, hopefully involving some of our national clubs and rally organisers. For those many thousand coming in for the day, especially Saturday, you will notice a huge difference, with lots more to see and do.
Evening entertainment will be onsite over three different venues, including extra bars and the huge exhibition hall with guest DJs from all over the UK, quality live bands and a variety of music with per usual a dedicated Soul zone. Acts are still to be confirmed so keep an eye on Scootering magazine for regular updates.
Buses will be running throughout the rally weekend, day and night, to the site from Ryde. These are available for those in digs in town to use to get to the site, and also for those camping at Smallbrook who want to go into town for a change of scenery.
The Smallbrook Stadium site has a purpose built clubhouse with bar that has served the rally well for a number of years now. As well as drinks they serve food throughout the day from breakfast and in past years has been the venue for the onsite party as well.
Even though the standard of catering has improved recently, with mobile vendors also on site, VFM tell us they hope to provide even more variety this year. With the site being the centre of the rally this year, more bars will be brought in too.
Toilets and showers are also situated in the clubhouse, with additional shower units and toilets located throughout the site.
The dealers market here is one of the biggest you’ll see at a rally, and so if you have any problems there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to buy the spare parts that you need and fit them before your ride home. There are also a number of shops/dealers who set up ramps and offer a repair service too, should you need it. The AA will also be on site, offering advice and technical support to their members.
As always at Smallbrook, VFM volunteers work 24/7 throughout the rally, and can always be found manning (and womanning) the main entrance gate if needed. A rally programme will also be provided over the weekend with further details and information.
The scooter ride out on the Isle of Wight is something of a legend in itself, with hundreds of scooters taking at least 20 minutes to exit the car park on Ryde seafront.
So popular is it that the police have taken to cordoning off the road to other traffic, allowing scooters to begin assembling from around 10am on Sunday morning, before the 1pm departure. Whether you decide to take part in it, or simple enjoy scooter watching, there’s plenty to see. You will find everything from classic scooters to modern autos, restored Vespas and Lambrettas alongside NSU Primas, Maicos, Moto Rumis, BSAs, Heinkels and more. Rustoration to rats, choppers to street racers, Modded up Christmas trees to full-blown customs with murals and gold plating all over them, regular reliable steeds – anything from 50cc upwards. There is no other place in the world you can see this variety of scooters, and we reckon no other scene like this when it comes to variety all riding together.
The local IOW scooter clubs marshal the ride out, and the rumour is this year they have a different location for everyone to enjoy. One word of caution, be patient when departing Ryde and leave some space between you and the scooter in front so you don’t end up burning your clutch out with too much stop-starting!
For those wishing to camp at Smallbrook, you will receive a weekend pass which will give you unlimited access to the whole site.(Available now off this website). The camping areas have been extended and VFM are working with Smallbrook to ensure that all the facilities provided will be at their best.
For those many thousand coming in for the day, tickets will be available on he gate, and separate evening tickets will be on sale per usual via this website.
How to get there:
Every year VFM arrange a discount for scooter riders with Red Funnel ferries on their route from Southampton to East Cowes, this is now in place. Just book online and you get it automatically. Check Scootering magazine or our website for further details.
Red Funnel: www.redfunnel.co.uk or call 0844 844 9988 or 0845 155 2442 from overseas.
Wightlink: www.wightlink.co.uk or call 0871 376 1000 (calls cost 7ppm plus network costs) or +44 23 9285 5230 from overseas.
As for your journey, once you get south of the M4 corridor there are plenty of options other than the motorways and major routes. Our thinking is this; it’s the August Bank Holiday weekend, you’ve got three or four days of holiday on your scooter, so why not plan a route that takes in some scenery like the New Forest or a coastal road if possible?
Accommodation in Ryde is often booked up far in advance, but if you persevere then you can get lucky. There are plenty of B&Bs, hotels, holiday lets and caravans in the vicinity and VFM* will be running buses from the rally site into town throughout the weekend. Visit www.visitisleofwight.co.uk or telephone +44 (0)1983 813813.
Where to go
In a word, Ryde. That’s where the rally is centered around and everything is happening. But do explore the whole island, it’s not that big and after all that’s why you have a scooter isn’t it, to ride it?
Wherever you go on the island however, away from the campsite, the place to be is on The Green in Ryde, the meeting place for many during the day. Buy a pint from the King Lud opposite, grab a carry-out from a nearby offy, or simply park your scooter on the green, treat yourself to an ice cream and watch the rest of the scootering world go by.
